Exploring how to (re)connect to the Earth through new and old age philosophies and practices

Ritual, Ceremony and Celebration

What is the difference between a ritual, a ceremony and a celebration?

There tends to be a lot of confusion here. Many sources tend to use the words interchangeably, especially ritual and ceremony. I don’t like this because I do see a difference, so here is what I’ve concluded:

A ritual is the action of using an organized, practiced and often used series of steps to bring about or invoke a change (in your life, health, spiritual connection, pizza delivery, whatever).

A ceremony is when you make a big deal out of a ritual. In a ceremony you can try to bring about change or thank whoever for change happening. While you can have a ceremony by yourself, it tends to have more people involved.

A celebration is a party, generally giving thanks for something and/or recognizing milestones and turning points. Tends to be more fun in company.
