Rites of Passage

What is a “Rite of Passage”?

A rite is any customary observance or practice. A rite of passage is any important act or event that serves to mark a passage from one stage of life to another.

Essentially, when there is a big change happening, we can call it a rite of passage and make a big deal about it. 😉

So if something big is happening to you or someone close to you, you can hold a special ritual, ceremony or celebration. Not sure how to set something up? Click here.

Here are some examples of Rites of Passage:

  • Births
  • Name-Giving
  • Deaths
  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Coming of Age
  • First Menstruation
  • Loss of Virginity
  • First Kill (for hunters)
  • Menopause
  • Moving
  • Big, new purchases (home, car, pet)
  • Cutting hair (if it was really long to really short)
  • First trip alone (i.e. study abroad)
  • High School Graduation
  • Off to college/university
  • College/university graduation

These are things that are considered “big events” in a person’s life, and things that deserve some recognition of some kind. You don’t have to have a giant party, but you can if you want. The important thing is to mark the occasion for being what it is – a special change.
