Exploring how to (re)connect to the Earth through new and old age philosophies and practices

Chakra Meditation

What are these chakras everyone keeps talking about?

Basically, they are spinning balls of colorful light located along the vertical axis of your body.

Each color has a plethora of different meanings, symbols, organs and emotions they “rule” over.

If you go with the yogic flow, you can use the long cool names originally given to them. If you’re looking for something a little more simple, just call them Red, Yellow, and so on. I can never remember the the proper names but have had great work done just thinking, “Okay, Green, it’s your turn!”

Violet – Crown – Sahasrara

Indigo – Third Eye – Ajna

Blue – Throat – Vishuddha

Green – Heart – Anahata

Yellow – Solar Plexus – Manipura

Orange – Sacrum – Swadhisthana

Red – Root – Muladhara

Here is a nice and easy chakra meditation to get you going. You’ll notice a lot of similarities with the basic meditation I have already given you.

  • Make sure your surroundings are comfortable, clean and relatively quiet. If you want some gentle music in the background, go for it. But if you have noisy neighbors, shut your windows. You might even want to put earplugs in.
    • The idea is to limit your senses so that you can’t be easily distracted.
    • Clean is important because you don’t want to get distracted by hair flowing by on the floor around you or that weird smell coming from the dirty dishes in the sink. Dirty surroundings are easy to get distracted in!
  • Once you’ve decided your surroundings are comfortable, clean and relatively quiet, sit or lie down comfortably. I prefer my yoga mat, but you can sit on your sofa or a comfy cushion – I just don’t recommend your bed because if you get too relaxed it’ll be way too easy to fall asleep. So unless your meditation is to help you sleep, avoid the bed.
  • Now it’s time to relax – work from the bottom up, roots to branches. Start with your toes and think, “Okay toes, wiggle softly, come to stillness and feel elongated but relaxed.” I find using the adjective “elongated” gives me a picture of my toes and the rest of my body not being all cramped up and tense. I invite you to try using the word and see if it helps you, too. Move from your toes to your ankles, calves, knees, thighs, and so on, hitting all the joints and organs in between from the toes to the crown of your head. Once I get to my shoulders I move to my arms and when my fingers are done I go back to my shoulders and then up to my neck. I also make sure to pay attention to my jaw, tongue, sinuses, eyes, ears and forehead. Even my hair gets a friendly reminder to relax!
  • Picture a small red ball of light at the base of your spine. Watch it grow brighter and expand out in a full 3-D circle until there is a flash of red and the ball is back around the base of your spine, but it is glowing brightly and warmly and you can feel a slight sensation where it is.
  • Picture a small orange light around or above your pelvic area. Watch it grow brighter and expand out in a full 3-D circle until there is a flash of orange and the ball is back around your pelvic area, but it is glowing brightly and warmly and you can feel a slight sensation where it is.
  • Picture a small yellow light behind or just above your bellybutton. Watch it grow brighter and expand out in a full 3-D circle until there is a flash of yellow and the ball is back around your bellybutton, but it is glowing brightly and warmly and you can feel a slight sensation where it is.
  • Picture a small green light right in the center of your chest. Watch it grow brighter and expand out in a full 3-D circle until there is a flash of green and the ball is back around your chest, but it is glowing brightly and warmly and you can feel a slight sensation where it is.
  • Picture a small blue or turquoise light somewhere along your throat, ranging from the base to the top. Watch it grow brighter and expand out in a full 3-D circle until there is a flash of blue and the ball is back around your throat, but it is glowing brightly and warmly and you can feel a slight sensation where it is.
  • Picture a small purple (indigo) light right in the middle of your forehead. Watch it grow brighter and expand out in a full 3-D circle until there is a flash of purple and the ball is back around your forehead, but it is glowing brightly and warmly and you can feel a slight sensation where it is.
  • Picture a small violet (light purple) light right on the top of your head. Think of where the “soft spot” on a baby would be. Watch it grow brighter and expand out in a full 3-D circle until there is a flash of violet and the ball is back around your “soft spot”, but it is glowing brightly and warmly and you can feel a slight sensation where it is.
  • Imagine a white light snaking up through the balls of light, connecting each one together until it explodes out of the top of your head and into the heavens, toward the sun or Source and connecting. This light connection reaches down through your chakras and down deep into the earth, connecting the earth, you and the heavens. Imagine the energy pulsating through you.
  • Smile at how beautifully colorful you are! You’re officially a rainbow. 😉
  • Once you’ve decided you’ve had enough, if you like, you can ask whoever it is you’d like, including yourself (yes, talk to yourself!) to fill you with energy to help you avoid the post-mediation energy droop that sometimes happens. Feel the white light release you. Watch the colorful balls of light stay bright but shrink a little in their size, from about the size of a cantaloupe to the size of a golf ball. Leave them there. You’ve activated them (i.e. woke them up and gave them a polish) and you want them to stay on.
  • Then you’ll want to slowly start wiggling your toes and fingers. This will help you bring back your awareness to your body. Next, slowly open your eyes. A really nice, deep couple of inhales and exhales help here. Smile and softly move around on your butt or floor. When you’re ready, stand up. Do a little dance. Okay, so you don’t have to, but if you’re feeling particularly good after, a little happy dance never hurts, right?
